In 1979, VAZ launched production of a new model that replaced the classic "Kopeyka", although for a time both cars came off the assembly line simultaneously. Engineers significantly reworked the powertrains and design, and also improved interior comfort. A total of more than ten modifications were created, including two sports versions that competed in rally races.
Under the hood, gasoline carburetor and injection engines with a displacement of 1.2 to 1.6 liters were installed, as well as a 1.52-liter diesel engine. Transmissions — initially a four-speed, then a five-speed manual. Drive — rear.
