Many car owners, when diagnosing the engine or replacing components, face the question: where is the lambda probe located? This sensor is responsible for analyzing the composition of exhaust gases and directly affects fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, and engine operation. In the article, we will analyze where the lambda probe is located in general, and also indicate the exact location on popular models: Sens 1.3, Lanos, VAZ 2115, and Opel Vectra B 1.8.

Where is the lambda probe located: general description

The lambda probe (or oxygen sensor) is installed in the vehicle's exhaust system. Usually, it can be found:
  • Before the catalytic converter - this is the main (regulating) sensor;
  • After the catalytic converter - an additional (diagnostic) probe that monitors the efficiency of exhaust neutralization.
On some models, there may be only one probe (mainly before the catalytic converter), especially on Euro-2 vehicles. Typically, the lambda probe has the shape of a small cylinder screwed into the flange of the exhaust pipe and connects to the electronic control unit (ECU) via a connector.

Lambda probe VAZ 2115 - where is it located

On the VAZ 2115, especially the injection version, one lambda probe is installed. It is located:
  • in the intake manifold, before the catalytic converter;
  • on the outer side - it is clearly visible with the hood open if you look down along the exhaust manifold.
The probe is screwed into the exhaust tract, and a connector with wires is connected to it. Sometimes it is covered by a heat shield that needs to be removed for access. On some Euro-3 modifications of the VAZ 2115, there may also be a second probe after the catalytic converter, but this is less common.

Lambda probe Sens 1.3 - where is it located

On Sens 1.3 vehicles, which use an engine from ZAZ (licensed MeMZ), the lambda probe is located:
  • in the exhaust system, before the catalytic converter - screwed into the pipe near the engine;
  • if the catalytic converter is absent, the probe is installed in the exhaust manifold.
Usually, only one lambda probe is installed on Sens, and it is clearly visible when inspecting under the hood. It is connected to the ECU via a three- or four-pin connector.

Lambda probe Lanos - where is it located

On Lanos (1.5 liter, 8 valves, as well as DOHC 1.6), the lambda probe is located in the exhaust system:
  • Before the catalytic converter - the main sensor is installed in the pipe between the manifold and the catalytic converter;
  • After the catalytic converter - on Euro-3 versions or when a second sensor is present (for example, on 1.6 DOHC).
To find the sensor:
  1. Open the hood;
  2. Look at the lower part of the exhaust manifold;
  3. You will find the sensor screwed in at an angle, with wires coming from it.
In most cases, the lambda probe Lanos where is it located - in the upper part of the pipe before the catalytic converter, closer to the engine shield.

Lambda probe Opel Vectra B 1.8 - where is it located

Lambda probe Opel Vectra B 1.8 where is it located - a question that worries many owners of these cars, especially when repairing the exhaust system. On Opel Vectra B 1.8, two sensors are usually installed:
  1. The first lambda probe (regulating) - is located:
    • in the front part of the exhaust manifold, immediately after the connection point with the cylinder head;
    • easily accessible from above under the hood;
    • in some cases, it may be necessary to remove the heat shield.
  2. The second lambda probe (diagnostic) - is located:
    • after the catalytic converter, in the second part of the exhaust pipe;
    • accessible from below the car - you need to jack up the car or use a pit.
Important: when replacing lambda probes on Opel Vectra B 1.8, it is recommended to use high-quality analogs, as sensor errors greatly affect engine operation.

Tips for replacement and diagnostics:

  • Always disconnect the battery before removing the lambda probe.
  • Use special wrenches for oxygen sensors - they make unscrewing easier.
  • Do not touch the sensitive part of the sensor with your hands.
  • After replacement, it is advisable to clear errors with a scanner.

Now you know where the lambda probe is located on different cars:
  • Lambda probe VAZ 2115 where is it located - before the catalytic converter, in the exhaust tract;
  • Lambda probe Sens 1.3 where is it located - in the area of the exhaust manifold;
  • Lambda probe Lanos where is it located - in the pipe between the engine and the catalytic converter;
  • Lambda probe Opel Vectra B 1.8 where is it located - one before, the second after the catalytic converter.
If your Check Engine light is on, and diagnostics show an error related to the oxygen sensor - now you can quickly find the necessary element and replace it. A properly working lambda probe means fuel savings, stable traction, and compliance with environmental standards.
