Engine mounts are parts that secure the motor in a fixed position and smooth out vibrations. Over time, they wear out, lose elasticity, or tear. If the defect is not detected in time, the power unit will start to vibrate, and impacts will be transmitted to the body. Function of engine mounts

The mount (also called a cushion) connects the motor to the car body. Its task is to absorb vibrations and prevent the unit from shifting during acceleration or braking. As a rule, the engine is installed on three or four mounts: left, right, and rear (in some cases, front). If one of them stops working properly, the balance is disrupted, and this immediately affects handling.

Obvious symptoms of a worn mount

  1. Shaking at startup and at idle.
    The first alarming signal is noticeable vibration felt in the cabin and on the steering wheel. If the motor used to run smoothly, but now the "shaking" is clearly felt, it is worth checking the mounts.
  2. Jerks when shifting gears.
    When the mount is torn, the motor shifts slightly from its place. This leads to jolts when changing speeds or when sharply pressing the gas pedal.
  3. Knocking or squeaking under the hood.
    If muffled impacts are heard during acceleration or braking, most likely the engine mount is worn. This sound most often appears when engaging reverse gear.
  4. Engine misalignment.
    Sometimes the failure is visible to the naked eye. Opening the hood, you may notice that the engine has "settled" to one side, which means one of the mounts has weakened or torn.
  5. Excessive body vibrations.
    The car starts to vibrate more intensely than usual, especially on uneven roads. This also indicates that the engine mount is not in order.

Ways to determine a faulty mount

  1. Inspection.
    Open the hood and carefully examine the mounts. Rubber tears, cracks, or traces of oil are a clear sign that the mount has failed.
  2. Using a pry bar or crowbar.
    Carefully lift the engine by prying it through a rubber pad. If the motor noticeably moves even with slight effort, that particular mount is damaged.
  3. Check when shifting gears.
    Start the engine and engage gears one by one while holding the brake. If the motor jerks sharply when selecting "D" or "R", this helps determine which engine mount is faulty.
  4. Diagnostics at a service center.
    Not always can a failure be detected by eye. At a service station, technicians lift the car on a lift and use special vibration sensors that accurately indicate which mount needs to be replaced.

What delaying replacement can lead to

If you put off repairs, serious problems may arise:
  • damage to the exhaust manifold;
  • cracks in the exhaust pipe;
  • accelerated wear of the gearbox and drives;
  • appearance of additional vibrations and play.
Therefore, as soon as you detect signs of mount wear, it is better to replace it immediately. The cost of the part is low, and the work takes only 1–2 hours.

  • The motor has become noisier at idle;
  • A muffled impact is heard when engaging gears;
