The influence of design on car choice

September 16, 2008 · A discussion from the forum archive

When choosing a car, how much does its exterior appearance or interior design influence your decision?
Interior design plays a key role for me, because most of the time behind the wheel you look at the cabin, not the body. For example, I absolutely cannot stand wooden trim inserts, but I love chrome details in any form. It is important that the dashboard and upholstery are made of quality materials that are pleasant to the touch. As for the exterior, it all comes down to purely individual taste: you look at the car and immediately understand whether it suits you or not.
If you don't like the way a car looks, you won't even get behind the wheel, and therefore won't buy it. This applies to the Lanos, the Tucson, and the Škodas and Chevrolets — all of them. It happens that a car is attractive on the outside, but inside — it disappoints. Here too, you're unlikely to decide to buy, although you might put up with it. For example, a cute Mazda 3 with a terrible plastic dashboard, a decent-looking Golf with a bland and sterile interior, and the Ford Focus also has something strange inside. But the Honda Civic, Peugeot 307, Citroën C4, and Seats — that's already my choice. Although, if the budget is limited, there's no room for whims — as long as it runs on its own. And regarding wooden inserts — especially lacquered ones — I completely agree: that's the gloomiest option.
Regarding the wood — I disagree. If it's real wood, not plastic in a Japanese or Korean style, then it looks quite decent. By the way, the Golf's interior can't be called bland — it's calm and comfortable. Although, perhaps someone might prefer the Peugeot's dashboard with a bunch of small buttons chaotically scattered across the console.
In my opinion, wood is a choice for the older generation, whether it's natural or some other kind. Of course, there are connoisseurs of such material, but I don't count myself among them, and neither do most of my acquaintances.
In my opinion, you can't earn a car with wood in the interior while you're young — so it turns out that those who have already achieved everything drive such cars. But, honestly, I think older people are attracted not so much by the wood trim as by the inconspicuous black body color.
design is 51% of my choice. and wood is a plus, if it fits the theme.
When choosing a car, you always first pay attention to the exterior, and only then look at the interior, driving performance, and technical specifications. For a long time, I had a dream to buy a Honda Accord, but now my priorities have changed — now I want a Volkswagen Passat of the sixth generation.
