Automatic or manual?

September 16, 2008 · A discussion from the forum archive

Which gearbox makes you feel more at ease behind the wheel?
Definitely — automatic! In Kyiv traffic jams, you get tired even with an automatic transmission, let alone a manual. For a long time, I drove a stick shift, and I liked it, but after long traffic jams and trips, my legs would swell and get tired. When I switched to an automatic, I realized: I don't want to go back. Why make life harder for yourself? Sometimes I get behind the wheel of a car with a manual — I drive fine, but when I return to an automatic, I realize again how much more convenient and pleasant it is. I know people who just love manuals — the very process of shifting gears and having full control over the car. But that's a matter of taste. Perhaps they just haven't tried driving an automatic for a long time.
With a manual, of course, you feel more confident. A good automatic is still hard to find. But if you spend most of your time in the city, an automatic is a real lifesaver. In long traffic jams, driving a manual is really dreary. However, traffic jams are dreary in general. The best thing is to take the metro. Or stock up on audiobooks so you don't waste time. I haven't had a chance to use Tiptronic, though. Maybe with it, driving an automatic is more interesting, who knows.
Or a normal automatic with manual mode — there are few of those — or a manual. This is to be sure.

Automatic. Modern automatic transmissions are made to a high standard, so they are not inferior to manual ones, and in some ways even better. Technology is advancing.
Previously, I didn't even want to think about an automatic transmission, but after struggling with the pedals in Kyiv traffic jams, now I know for sure: my next car will definitely be an automatic.
The first car had a manual transmission, but after switching to a CVT, I realized I would never go back to manual. Comfort is important to me, and in city conditions an automatic transmission is simply indispensable.
Modern advanced automatic transmissions are already no worse than manual ones — neither in dynamics nor in fuel consumption. The future belongs to automatics.
