Unlike adaptive cruise control (how it works, see the VW Golf Sportsvan test), the new system can "predict" emergency situations.
In particular, smart cruise control works using a camera and radars and can "see" a car not only in front, but also when it "cuts in" from another lane.

Honda clarifies that the "world's first smart cruise control" warns the driver of a possible collision 5 seconds before a potential accident. The system displays a corresponding warning on the information display and applies braking. The developers also claim that the i-ACC technology slows the car much more smoothly than adaptive cruise does.
