The three-door hatchback with a hybrid powertrain became the first model of the brand to use a combination of gasoline and electric engines. The prototype debuted in 1997 at an exhibition in Tokyo, and serial production began three years later. In first-generation cars, the rear side panels half-covered the wheels — this was their distinctive feature. The second generation was introduced in 2009 at the Los Angeles Auto Show: this solution was abandoned, the car became five-door and received a more traditional appearance. In 2011, the model was updated, changing suspension settings, as well as the exterior and interior.
The powertrain of the Honda Insight consists of a 1.3-liter gasoline engine that works in conjunction with a 9.7 kW electric motor. The hybrid system interacts with a continuously variable transmission.
The car has front-wheel drive.
