Automatic transmission
An automatic transmission is a type of gearbox where the gear shifting process is performed without driver involvement, and a torque converter is responsible for this. The decision to shift is made automatically based on the current vehicle speed.
Any automatic transmission has at least four basic modes: P (parking, which locks the wheels), N (neutral position, providing idle), R (reverse mode), and D (drive mode). These modes can only be changed while holding the brake pedal.
There are various types of automatic transmissions: Autostick (an automatic transmission that allows manual intervention in shifting), a CVT (continuously variable automatic transmission), and robotic manual transmissions — both with a single clutch and with two clutches.
