The Subaru Legacy, introduced in 1989, was produced in sedan and station wagon body styles. The first generation of this model (the name translates to "legacy") had front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option. Starting in 1996, all Legacy versions became all-wheel drive, coinciding with the introduction of the Outback off-road modification based on the station wagon. Later, the Outback became a separate model.
