Toyota FJ Cruiser
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a retro-style SUV that serves as a modern reinterpretation of the Land Cruiser model from the 1960s–80s. The model name consists of two parts: «FJ» indicates the use of F-series engines, while «J» denotes a small SUV. The second part, «Cruiser», translates to «cruiser».
After the FJ40 was discontinued in 1984, Toyota focused on producing premium SUVs. Nearly twenty years later, the company decided to revive the legendary model, but in a modern form with advanced technologies. The exterior design was developed by Calty Design specialists, drawing inspiration from its predecessor while adding contemporary details. A distinctive feature is the rear compact doors that open against traffic, with hidden handles. In 2003, a concept car was presented at the Detroit Auto Show, receiving positive feedback from fans of the original FJ. Following this, shareholders who had previously doubted the need for serial production approved the project, and in 2005, the production version was unveiled at the same auto show. Most components and assemblies for the new model were borrowed from the 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra.
The vehicle is built on a modified Land Cruiser Prado platform with a shortened wheelbase. In addition to the standard version, limited editions such as the TRD Special Edition and Trail Teams Edition were produced, featuring distinctive exterior and interior details.
In Ukraine, the Toyota FJ Cruiser has been sold since 2007 through independent dealers. The model is equipped with a 4.0-liter gasoline engine paired with a five-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual (only on all-wheel-drive versions). Drive is rear-wheel or all-wheel.
