History

The first Octavia was produced in the Czech Republic from 1959 to 1971. The name symbolizes "eight" — the model became the eighth passenger car in the Skoda lineup. Its predecessor is considered to be the Skoda 440.

Initially, the 1959 Octavia was produced only in a coupe body, but in 1961 the Combi version appeared. The estate turned out to be very popular and was produced for 10 years, until 1971. The coupe lasted only 5 years on the assembly line — its production ended in 1964.

In the early 60s, the "hot" Octavia Touring Sport with a 50-horsepower engine appeared. Later, the Octavia 1200 Touring Sport with a 55-horsepower engine, accelerating to 130 km/h, was released.

After a long break, the Octavia returned to the market in 1996. The model was developed under the leadership of Volkswagen on the PQ34 platform (like the VW Jetta). The project leader was Dirk van Braeckel, the creator of the Audi A3 and Audi 80 Avant.

In 2000, the Octavia underwent a facelift. In 2004, the next generation appeared — the Skoda Octavia A5 with a new body design, interior, and an expanded range of engines.

Despite the change of generations, the Octavia Tour continued to be produced in parallel with the Octavia A5. In Ukraine, it was produced at the Eurocar plant until April 8, 2010.

On February 17, 2004, the millionth Octavia rolled off the assembly line — it was an Octavia Tour with a 1.9-liter diesel engine producing 90 hp.

In 2005, the hot version Octavia RS appeared.

2007 was marked by the release of the off-road version Skoda Octavia Scout — an estate with plastic protection and all-wheel drive.

The facelifted Octavia A5 FL debuted in 2008 with new headlights and a modified body design.

In 2010, production of the Octavia Tour ceased in Ukraine, replaced by the pre-facelift Octavia A5.

The Skoda Octavia A7 debuted in 2012. The model received the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, changed dramatically externally and internally, but retained family traits.

In 2013, the Octavia A7 began production in Ukraine at the Eurocar plant in Solomonovo (Transcarpathian region). In September 2013, production of the Skoda Octavia Combi A7 estate started. In spring 2014, production of the latest-generation hot Octavia RS began, and in the second half of 2014 — the off-road Scout version.

In March 2014, Skoda showed the Vision C concept, which is called the forerunner of the Octavia in a "four-door coupe" body.

Exterior

Regardless of the generation, the Skoda Octavia is distinguished by a restrained design without bold solutions. Its appearance can be called harmonious — the model traditionally has elegant forms.

The author of the Octavia design is considered to be Jozef Kaban, now the chief designer of Skoda. He also worked on modern Audi models and created the Bugatti Veyron supercar.

Interior

The interior of the Skoda Octavia matches the car's exterior. Everything inside is intuitive and does not cause irritation.

The Octavia A7 is a typical representative of the model: the dashboard and center console are not overloaded, the design is laconic, almost minimalist. In the center are the audio system and climate control unit. The instrument panel is classic white on black, readings are easy to read.

In terms of interior space, the Octavia can compete with cars of a higher class. People of any height will sit comfortably in the front and rear. The seats are wide, comfortable, with pronounced lateral support.

The trunk deserves high praise. Its volume is 590 liters, and the large door simplifies loading. With the seats folded down, the volume increases to 1580 liters, allowing you to transport long items.

Engine and transmission

The Skoda Octavia offered the same engines as Volkswagen models. The most common Octavia Tour in Ukraine was equipped with petrol engines: 1.4 MPI (75 hp), 1.6 (75 hp), 1.6 MPI (102 hp), 1.8 20V (125 hp), 1.8 20V Turbo (150 hp and 180 hp for RS), 2.0 (115 hp).

Diesel inline 4-cylinder turbo engines were also available: 1.9 SDI (68 hp), 1.9 TDI (90 hp), 1.9 TDI (100 hp), 1.9 TDI (110 hp), 1.9 TDI (130 hp).

The Octavia Tour was equipped with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The Octavia A5 received a robotic DSG transmission with dual clutch.

For the Octavia A7, 5 engines and two types of transmission were offered — a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG robot with two clutches.

The petrol range includes: 1.2 TSI (105 hp), 1.4 TSI (140 hp), 1.8 TSI (180 hp), and 2.0 TFSI (220 hp for RS). The new Octavia RS accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and the maximum speed with a manual gearbox is 248 km/h.

The diesel engine is a 2.0 TDI with 150 hp.

Safety

All generations of the Skoda Octavia demonstrate a good level of safety according to crash test results.

The Octavia A7 passed Euro NCAP tests in 2013 and received the maximum 5 stars. According to the committee, the model provides a high level of protection for adults and children, and its design reduces pedestrian injuries in an accident.

Adult occupant protection is rated at 93%, child at 86%, pedestrian at 82%. The level of active safety received 66%.

Features

The wide choice of engines allows the Octavia buyer to choose a car for leisurely driving (base 1.2 engine), economical (diesel), or sporty (RS). The Combi estate and the off-road Scout version are also available — an optimal option for country life or those who need a large trunk.

Popularity in Ukraine

The Skoda Octavia is not only the most popular model in its class, but also consistently holds high positions in the Ukrainian sales ranking.

On the secondary market, used Octavias are in high demand, so the model does not lose much in price even after several years of operation.

Our verdict

In Ukraine, the Skoda Octavia is valued for its reliability and functionality. It is suitable both for corporate use and as a family car. The spacious interior, roomy trunk, and build quality are its main advantages.
