The world premiere of the updated Skoda Superb sedan took place at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008. This model continues the traditions laid down by the engineers and designers of the Czech brand 75 years ago — in 1934, when the first Superb of the "luxury" class appeared. In those times, it was a true premium car.

The signature radiator grille on the front unmistakably indicates the Czech origin of this large sedan. The latest headlights with a stern look and the front bumper add prestige and solidity to the Skoda flagship.

Back in the 20s of the last century, Skoda tried to establish itself in the premium segment by launching the production of limousines. However, the financial crisis forced the company to switch to small cars, and the war and the post-war socialist era finally buried the luxury ambitions of the brand. The revival of the Superb name occurred only in 2001.

Over eight years, the first modern Superb collected many automotive awards and earned recognition from European buyers. The extended wheelbase and spacious cabin made it an excellent choice for corporate fleets. The new model is designed to build on the success of its predecessor.

It is impossible to find fault with the quality of the trim materials in the cabin. Of course, Skoda is not Mercedes or BMW, but among other classmates in the business class, the Superb looks like a clear leader. Solid plastic, pleasant-to-the-touch leather, perfect fit of all elements without gaps, and hard panels are skillfully disguised as expensive textured plastic.

The word "Superb" translated from English means "majestic", "luxurious", "noble". The new flagship of the Czech brand emphasizes established traditions and at the same time strengthens the new perception of the Skoda brand.

The slightly clumsy profile is the price for the maximally spacious cabin and the ingenious fifth-door mechanism, which I will tell you about a little later.

In the back row, the space is no worse than in executive sedans — legroom in the new "Superb" has been increased by 19 mm. A person of almost any build (except perhaps Guinness Book record holders) will sit behind themselves without problems. Small footrests are provided for the legs, and an umbrella is hidden in the rear left door.

The calm, conservative, but at the same time solid appearance of the new "Superb" is the second step of the company Skoda (the first was made in 2001 with the appearance of the first Superb) on the path to those long-standing premium traditions of the automaker.

Although the overall length of the Superb only slightly exceeds the dimensions of the previous generation, the transverse engine layout and the relocation of the gearbox made it possible to increase the cabin in almost all directions.

On a straight road, the car holds confidently, although it sways slightly across. In the steering, familiar habits of the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Octavia are guessed. And this is not accidental: the Superb chassis is essentially a symbiosis of the main components of these two models.

The front seats with a successful profile warmly welcome passengers, and many electric adjustments allow you to easily find a comfortable position behind the wheel. On the center console — the optional Columbus navigation system and a new climate control unit, exactly the same as on the new Volkswagen Passat CC. Having sat in the Superb, it is not easy to distinguish it from related VW models. It is nice to see that Skoda is gradually getting rid of the image of a budget division of the German concern and often surpasses its "relatives" from VW.

The trunk holds 565 liters. If you fold the rear sofa, the volume grows to 1670 liters. In normal mode, the lid opens like on standard sedans. But you just press a special key, and it rises together with the glass, increasing the opening almost twice.

I catch myself thinking that the Skoda Superb is a car that you want to talk about from the position of a rear passenger. A perfectly profiled rear sofa, a comfortable armrest with cup holders — what else do you need to calmly get from the office to home after a stressful day.

The test Superb stood on optional 17-inch alloy wheels. In the basic configuration — wheels with a diameter of 16 inches.

But the "Superb" is not only a spacious sedan: it also has an impressive trunk with a volume of 565 liters. If you fold the rear sofa, the space for cargo easily increases to 1670 liters. Now about the main feature of the new Skoda Superb — the patented Twindoor trunk opening system. In normal mode, the lid rises like on all standard sedans. But you just press a special key, and it rises together with the glass, increasing the opening almost twice. This is very convenient when transporting large-sized cargo.

The optional Columbus navigation system will add 63,600 rubles to the price of the "Superb". And if you supplement it with a TV tuner, you will have to pay 101,100 rubles.

On the Russian market, the Skoda Superb is offered with three powertrain options: two petrol engines of 1.8 and 3.6 liters, as well as a two-liter turbodiesel.

The petrol TSI engine with a volume of 1.8 liters, familiar from the Octavia and other VW concern models, develops 160 horsepower and is equipped with direct injection and turbocharging. The flagship option is the V6 FSI with a volume of 3.6 liters, producing 260 "horses" and 350 Nm of torque, available in the range from 2500 to 5000 rpm. The most powerful version of the Superb comes exclusively with a robotic DSG gearbox with six gears and all-wheel drive, where the Haldex clutch of the fourth generation is responsible for torque distribution.

The climate control unit is exactly like the one in the new Octavia and Volkswagen Passat CC. That's unification for you!

Since we recently tested the 1.8-liter TSI on the Octavia, and the price of the top version Superb with the 3.6 engine almost reaches 1.7 million rubles, the choice fell on the flagship of the Czech brand with a diesel. The two-liter turbodiesel with direct injection delivers 170 horsepower and a torque of 350 Nm in the range of 1750–2500 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km/h for the diesel Superb takes 8.8 seconds, and the top speed is the coveted 222 km/h. The test car had a six-speed DSG gearbox. For such solid dimensions, the figures are quite respectable. The combination of the diesel engine and DSG is simply magnificent! With this tandem, the Skoda Superb is equally good as a calm sedan and as a fairly brisk hatchback (thanks to the Twindoor system). Pleasantly, the car's appetite rarely exceeded 10 liters per 100 km, and on the highway the onboard computer delighted with figures of 5.5 liters. Economy is a useful thing!

In terms of handling, the Superb was not a revelation. Its main priority is comfort, and here it has plenty. On a straight line, the car holds confidently, although it sways slightly on transverse waves. In its behavior on turns, familiar traits of the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Octavia are recognizable. And that's logical: the Superb's chassis is essentially a combination of components from these models. The steering lacks a bit of feedback, but for a car almost five meters long, that's forgivable. However, excellent sound insulation and a well-tuned suspension are pleasing. Definitely, the Superb is primarily a car for rear passengers, although its driver qualities are not bad at all.
