He decided to surprise his wife for her birthday. Needs advice on what to choose — wants a car that pleases both visually and with its features.

WHAT I WANT FROM A CAR

Image

A fresh model from a well-known brand. Definitely a feminine character.

Style

Attractive. Don't mind if it stands out a bit, but without going overboard.

Road behavior

Lively, responsive, soft suspension, and a quiet cabin.

Fuel consumption

Naturally, want to spend less at gas stations.

Inside

Spacious cabin and comfortable seats so as not to get tired on long trips. Trunk volume is not critical; better to add space for passengers.

Base trim

A decent audio system, quick air conditioning, and preferably ABS.

OPEL ASTRA

Reason for choice: an extremely practical model, and it still appeals to women.

When this model debuted, there was a lot of talk about it. My wife and I were also impressed. There was something about it that made you want to look back. I think the reason is this: Opel changed a lot compared to previous generations. The new approach to design made people reconsider their attitude toward the brand. For those years, the appearance was almost daring. The interior also seemed interesting. Maybe without frills, but it looked quite decent. That's still the case, but... Perhaps over time, as fresher and more interesting rivals appeared in this class, the interior no longer impresses against their background. It seems that this conservatism is what pushes the Astra into the background today with such a budget. However, I cannot completely cross it off the list of candidates for my wife. There is something in it that, as a rational person, doesn't let me just discard it. And the appearance is not the last factor here. Usually, cars with flashier looks are stolen more often. This one looks more modest.

But if I were to take it for my wife, I definitely wouldn't mess with the robotic gearbox. Driving with it is jerky. No matter how I tried, in automatic mode the car noticeably noses down when shifting gears. And in manual mode it's the same. I understand that you need to release the throttle before shifting to drive smoother. But that's clear to me; my wife, I'm afraid, would be unhappy. The robot gets a firm no.

But the suspension pleased me. The car confidently handles our broken roads. On the highway it also behaves decently. After driving on the freeway, I realized you wouldn't get tired on a long trip. In the city, I liked the visibility. Although from behind, of course, I'd like to see better.

Overall, the car is quite good, comfortable for its class. And the trim materials are up to par, and the cabin assembly is neat. The seats are very comfortable. The trunk is spacious. The rear row also pleased me. My daughter is ten years old, so she has two more years to ride back there. I'm sure she'd like the Astra. Only the intricate center console confused me. It takes time to figure out. And will my wife like it? She likes order and simplicity in everything.

Style

For its time, it was very good. But today it's perceived differently.

Road behavior

The engine and suspension pleased me. It handles well. Only the gearbox disappointed.

Interior

Thoughtful, balanced, ergonomic. But without a spark.

Fuel consumption

Acceptable, suits me.

Base trim

Overall, everything needed is there.

Make and modelOpel Astra 1.6
Dimensions4250x1795x1460 mm
Enginepetrol, 1598 cm3, 105 hp
Transmissionmanual, robotic, 5-speed
Max speed185 km/h
Acceleration12.3 s to 100 km/h

Pros: Practical, well-equipped, balanced in design and functions.

Cons: Looks outdated compared to competitors. Overly complicated center console.

HONDA CIVIC

Reason for choice: a fresh model with unique looks that remains practical and highly sought after.

At first, the Civic is simply stunning. It seems like it's from another world. It flew here only to refuel and will immediately rush back into space. A real space robot. But the longer I look at it, the clearer I see a young guy behind the wheel with a head full of dreams and a fat wallet. The Civic is a car for hanging out. It's easy to drive to a nightclub or cruise around the city until morning with like-minded people, fueled by energy drinks. This Civic is not just a car. It's a lifestyle that you need to match both externally and internally. And you need to think differently. I think such a buyer wants to seem more than to be. Would such a car suit my wife? Unlikely, she would reject it. With age, each of us becomes ourselves. The wind in the head subsides, and carefree days are replaced by worries and practicality. It seems we are already at that stage, so this car is not for us. Perhaps at first the Civic would impress her, but then the delight would pass, and she would look at it soberly.

And this applies not only to the exterior but also to the interior. Looking at this cosmic design, you just want to put on a helmet like Judge Dredd, don armor made of unknown material, attach blasters to your hands, and go conquer not the streets but the Galaxy. Where are you, Aliens, Predators? I'll fly to you on something that will amaze even you!

Still, I liked the car. Despite its futuristic look, it's quite capable of fitting into our realities. At least, it has the makings for that. It's comfortable and predictable. Like the Opel, it's equipped with a robotic gearbox. But it works incomparably better. Shifts are smooth, so I didn't even want to switch to manual mode. Perhaps this robot was the best of the three.

What I didn't like was rear visibility. The front is fine, but I didn't want to look back — you can't see anything anyway. The wide middle and rear pillars completely block the view.

It also seemed that the car is a bit stiff for our roads. Any small pothole makes the Civic shudder with the whole body. And that, in my opinion, is a direct path to something starting to rattle in the cabin. Although, maybe I'm wrong.

Style

A very mysterious car in terms of design. Definitely ahead of its time.

Road behavior

Responsive and dynamic car. Handles great, accelerates and brakes quickly. The suspension copes well with bumps.

Interior

Everything is in place, everything is terribly interesting, but I'm afraid that over time it will get boring, like a space shooter.

Fuel economy

Fuel consumption is like that of classmates. No surprises.

Standard equipment

The trim is basic, but it already has everything needed for comfortable and safe driving.

Make and model Honda Civic 1.8
Dimensions 4250x1760x1460 mm
Engine petrol, 1798 cm3, 140 hp
Transmission manual, robotic, 6-speed
Max speed 207 km/h
Acceleration 8.9 s to 100 km/h

Likes: Rich equipment and high level of comfort, excellent operation of the robotic gearbox, superb handling.

Dislikes: Too flashy appearance; I'm afraid it will quickly get old.

TOYOTA AURIS

Why chosen: a 2007 car with attractive looks and good potential.

I guessed right with this Japanese car right away. I look at the Auris and already see my wife behind the wheel. The car is not too glamorous, but not faceless either. It doesn't catch the eye like the Civic, but it doesn't look plain like the Astra. There's a freshness to it, but it doesn't try to be a trendsetter. The Auris is a hundred percent women's car. In the very sense of the word. An eighteen-year-old girl would look good in it too, but it's the calm, restrained style that gives the Toyota a special charm that suits young married ladies so well. Nothing extra, but tasteful.

test-drive-8.jpg

And the interior is the same story. There's a share of glamour here too, but it doesn't overwhelm, allowing you to focus on the main thing — driving. Although, I'd note a couple of things. Who at Toyota came up with putting the trip computer control button on the instrument panel? It's just inconvenient. To press it and find out, for example, how many kilometers are left until the tank is empty, you have to reach your hand right through the steering wheel. It's clear that you're unlikely to need it in a turn, but still...

However, this is the only ergonomics miss. Otherwise, everything is great. The handbrake is positioned perfectly. You pull it without bending or searching. The robotic gearbox selector is also in its place. Plus, like in the Civic, there are paddle shifters for manual shifting. The gearbox itself works well, but delays and a slight nod during shifts haven't gone away. And one more thing: when you release the brake pedal, the car immediately starts moving. Neither the Astra nor the Civic did that. It behaves like an automatic. On one hand, it's convenient, but if you remember that it's essentially a manual, this solution looks strange.

I also liked the Auris in motion. The suspension is comfortable enough, handling is up to par. Dynamics and top speed are also fine. The car accelerates briskly and brakes effectively. No problems on the highway either. It holds the road confidently. At least, driving at 170 km/h isn't scary. The only surprise was that at this speed, the lower plastic engine bay cover tore off. Seems it wasn't secured reliably. Not critical, but where's the proverbial Toyota quality?

I really liked the car, especially if you look at it not with my own eyes, but with my wife's. I think she'd be happy with such a purchase.

Style

Looks nice and balanced. An ideal car for a woman.

Ride quality

A good car. It's comfortable both in the city and on the highway.

Interior

Pleases both the eye and the body. There are stylish elements. Spacious and functional.

Fuel economy

At the level of competitors. If there's a difference, it's small.

Standard equipment

Impressive, especially considering as many as 7 airbags.

Make and model Toyota Auris 1.6
Dimensions 4220x1760x1515 mm
Engine petrol, 1598 cm3, 124 hp
Transmission manual, robotic, 5-speed
Top speed 190 km/h
Acceleration 11.2 s to 100 km/h

Likes: Restrained exterior, interesting and practical interior.

Dislikes: Operation of the robotic manual gearbox, location of the trip computer button.

VOLVO C30

Why chosen: a stylish little thing from Volvo. Popular among unconventional personalities, including wealthy ladies.

And I didn't think that, while picking a car for my wife, I'd find something that would suit me too. Before I got to know the Volvo C30 in person, I considered it a purely women's car. Perhaps because I hadn't seen it in black before. Now my opinion has changed radically. Glamorous? I'd say it's "badass." And although I don't really like that word, it perfectly describes the essence of this car. It has stance, strength, pressure, and much more that fully matches a masculine character. Probably, if it weren't for the task of choosing a car for my wife, I'd take the C30 for myself without hesitation. Yes, it's not as functional as the Astra, Civic, or Auris. For example, there's practically no trunk here (I can hardly imagine putting anything larger than a briefcase in there). Yes, getting into the second row is inconvenient due to the three-door layout. And sitting there isn't comfortable: there's enough headroom, but legroom is tight. But these little things bother me the least. You don't expect practicality from this car; you expect a charge of positive emotions, and I got it.

I really liked how it drives. I'm delighted with a normal, honest automatic gearbox. It works adequately and quickly enough. But what amazed me most was how this car holds the road. And the fact that at speed in sharp turns the rear axle drifts a bit... well, that adds even more drive. After all, knowing this trait of the C30, you can have some fun when the occasion arises. Strangely enough, even the stiff suspension on this car is perceived completely differently than on others. I like that I feel the road not only through the steering wheel. I like that it's this stiffness that allows you to merge with the car, feeling it with your whole body. Due to my profession, I have a well-developed vestibular apparatus, so I instantly feel even the slightest deviation from the norm. And it's precisely this that allows you to drive the car literally on the edge, especially when the stability control is off. And although I'm not an extreme enthusiast, the C30 constantly provokes me for some reason. And why not, if it brings pleasure and is safe.

I think my wife would have liked this car too. But... no, I wouldn't take one for her. Not enough practicality, and after all, the wife has the house, the child, and me, after all.

Style

A memorable little thing. You won't confuse it with anything. True, for that you need to look at it in profile or from behind.

Ride quality

Before meeting this car, I couldn't even imagine that Volvos could have so much fun.

test-drive-12.jpg

Interior

Nothing outstanding, but everything is strict, concise, and high-quality, and that's what wins you over.

Fuel economy

A quite reasonable appetite for such an engine.

Standard equipment

Seems like everything is there, at least everything necessary is present.

Make and model Volvo C30 2.4
Dimensions 4250x1782x1447 mm
Engine petrol, 2435 cm3, 170 hp
Transmission automatic, 5-speed
Top speed 215 km/h
Acceleration 8.9 s to 100 km/h

What I liked: The automatic works without surprises, the engine pulls confidently, and the car looks great.

What I didn't like: I don't see a trunk as such here, and it's cramped in the back — that's for sure.

Reader's verdict

After getting to know these cars, two main contenders remained in my mind. The Toyota Auris — I firmly see it as a car for my wife. And the Volvo C30 — that's already a benchmark I want to strive for myself. The Honda Civic and Opel Astra are also good, but the former has too futuristic a look — I'm afraid that space theme will quickly get old. The latter, on the contrary, is too down-to-earth. Although, if things don't work out with the Auris quickly, I'll take another look at the Astra.

Editorial opinion

If you look at practicality, all four cars are roughly equal. Only the Volvo C30 stands out — due to its three-door body and inconvenient trunk. This time we choose the Honda Civic. And it's not even about the famous space design, but about how precisely the car senses what the driver wants from it at any given moment.
