GMC Terrain is a mid-size crossover that became the second model of this type in the lineup of the American brand, previously known for its SUVs and trucks. The model name translates from English as "landscape."
After the success of the first GMC crossover, the Acadia, released in 2007, the company decided to create a mid-size model designed to replace the Pontiac Torrent, which was discontinued in the late 2000s. The design was developed by the GMC team under the leadership of chief designer Carl Zipfel. The first sketches appeared by 2008, after which the exterior and interior were refined, while engineers worked on the technical aspects. In 2009, the first batch of prototypes was assembled, which underwent road tests in Alaska and Death Valley (USA).
The world premiere of the GMC Terrain took place in 2009 at the New York Auto Show, and the vehicle was then delivered to official dealers. The crossover, like its predecessor the Pontiac Torrent, is based on the global GM Theta platform, which also underpins the Chevrolet Equinox. The Terrain differs from the Equinox only in body and interior design. In 2012, GMC carried out a facelift: the model received a new grille, bumpers, and lighting, while the interior became more ergonomic. The engines and transmissions were also upgraded. The same year saw the introduction of a luxury version — the Terrain Denali.
In Ukraine, the GMC Terrain has been sold since 2011 through unofficial dealers. From autumn 2012, deliveries of the updated version began. The vehicle is equipped with gasoline engines of 2.4 and 3.6 liters, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Drive is front or all-wheel drive.
