The Mazda CX-7 crossover was destined for success from the very start. Even before the car officially went on sale, internet clubs for fans of the new model were already active in Russia. Later, "gray" cars from America began to be imported into the country, although buyers of such cars were left without a factory warranty.

In August, the first CX-7s finally reached official dealers. But it's too early to rejoice — the annual quota is almost sold out.

In Russia, the CX-7 is currently offered in two versions: Touring and Sport. The price difference is 98 thousand rubles. For this money, the buyer gets a six-disc audio system, a rain sensor, and a power-adjustable driver's seat — in short, everything that gives a feeling of superiority over the world.

For the sunroof in the Sport trim, you'll have to shell out another 26 thousand rubles. But is that the price for a sunbeam that will playfully dance across the attractive interior of the Mazda?

The engine in both versions is the same — a 238-horsepower 2.3-liter unit with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes just 8.3 seconds. Paired with the engine is a 6-speed automatic transmission, specially adapted for installation in the crossover.

Interestingly, the "automatic" appeared on the CX-7 thanks to the persistence of Russian marketers. Initially, it was planned to be introduced later.

Mazda, which recently entered our market, continues its offensive. After the bestseller Mazda3 and the successful "six," the sporty crossover CX-7 enters the fray. Although the word "fray" is not quite appropriate here — rather, we are witnessing a triumphant march. The European premiere took place near Paris, hinting at the Napoleonic ambitions of the manufacturer from Hiroshima.

One glance at the CX-7 is enough to recognize it as a member of the Mazda family. Both the front and rear ends subtly resemble other models of the brand. The sporty character is eloquently indicated by the large lower air intake and the compact radiator grille.

From the side, the front pillar, inclined at an angle of 66 degrees, immediately attracts attention. It is complemented by a smooth roofline and massive wheel arches. Large 18-inch wheels with 235/60 tires make the crossover look even more aggressive.

At the rear, the sporty theme is supported by two large-diameter exhaust pipes and taillights with round inserts. The trunk lid resembles that of the Mazda6 wagon.

It is known that the first "gray" CX-7s came to Russia from the USA, where sales started several months earlier.

But there is a nuance: our crossovers feature a redesigned front bumper, headlight washers, and front and rear fog lights.

Inside, you can also unmistakably recognize Mazda. It's a heady mix of the "three," the "six," and the MX-5 roadster. Surprisingly, the crossover's exterior looks fresh and original. Moreover, there are no irritating elements like wood inserts or other cheapness. Everything is strict and pragmatic. The handbrake lever, by tradition, is shifted toward the passenger. Japanese specifics.

We get behind the wheel and notice the upright seating position. So, they thought about sport not only in design. The speedometer scale is marked up to 240 km/h. Later it turned out that scaring people with such numbers is not worth it — the maximum speed is limited to 181 km/h.

The moment of truth arrives. Now it will become clear how well the design statement matches the engineering solutions. Floor the gas — and the CX-7 takes off.

To the specially tuned exhaust sound, the car rapidly gains speed. Result: 8.3 seconds to the coveted 100 km/h. For comparison, the BMW X3 with a 2.5-liter engine, a competitor to the "Japanese," accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. But to be fair, the Bavarian's top speed is 39 km/h higher.

Good dynamics are provided by the 2.3-liter gasoline MZR engine with 238 hp, equipped with direct injection, turbocharging, and an intercooler. The same engine is installed on the flagship Mazda3 MPS and Mazda6 MPS.

It's hard to put into words the feeling of confidence that takes over the driver behind the wheel of the CX-7. This is due to the rigid body, which ensures precise steering, stability, and adequate suspension operation. Up front — McPherson struts, at the rear — a multi-link scheme. The active torque distribution system allows optimal use of the 380 Nm produced by the engine.

As a result, torque between the front and rear axles can be distributed from 100/0 to 50/50 — depending on the road situation. This once again confirms the car's urban purpose. We became convinced of this by driving off the smooth highway into a field.

Our joy knew no bounds. Before us stretched a plowed French field, very reminiscent of our native Moscow region expanses. This is not Germany, where all lands are fenced off with an inconspicuous but very strong fence.

When driving over uneven dirt, the CX-7 resembles an ordinary passenger car. Of course, one must not forget about the 205-millimeter ground clearance, but overall, a crossover is a crossover.

In one place, we decided to ford an earthen berm. It didn't work the first time — the wheels spun. We had to make a second attempt, which turned out successful. In other words, born to run cannot crawl. They made the Mazda CX-7 for something else, for something else…

Driving
The Japanese crossover is magnificent on asphalt. It handles excellently and is in no way inferior to passenger cars. But off-road, you shouldn't get too bold. Mud is not its element.

Interior
The CX-7's exterior has elements borrowed from other Mazda models. But despite this, it looks very fresh.

Comfort
On the highway, there are no complaints about comfort. On dirt roads, vibrations are transmitted to the driver and passengers.

Safety
The car claims the highest rating under the Euro NCAP system.

Price
The considerable price is unlikely to scare off Russian buyers. There is a special demand for Mazda these days. The quota for this year is almost exhausted. So, they ask as much as needed — no less and no more.

Our opinion

Mazda specialists clearly know how to guess the hidden desires of Russian drivers. It seems that the CX-7 became a hit even before it officially went on sale. Even the abundance of "gray" cars brought from the States did not hinder its success. The crossover turned out successful and completely unlike other models. One glance is enough to understand: this is definitely a new Mazda.
