Samand: model history
IRAN KHODRO was founded in Tehran on August 18, 1962, with a registered capital of 100,000,000 Iranian rials (about 11,000 USD). The form of ownership is a public joint-stock company. The goals and objectives are to organize and manage plants for the production of various types of cars and spare parts, their sale on the local market and for export.
Now, 35 years later, IKCO remains the largest manufacturer of passenger cars and buses in the country. The company strives to fully satisfy demand in the local market, as well as to enter the world market. At the same time, great attention is paid to the production of spare parts within the country, which ultimately leads to a reduction in the cost of production. IRAN KHODRO is the largest car manufacturer in Iran, with a market share of about 70%. The registered capital of IRAN KHODRO as of 20/03/2003 was Rls. 2,404,687,500,000. In 1997, IRAN KHODRO broke the production record in its 30-year history, producing 111,111 units of various types of passenger cars and vans.
Later, the company was able to significantly increase the quantity and quality of its products. IRAN KHODRO received ISO 9001 certification from RWTUV, Germany.

The car is controversial. It evokes many emotions, both positive and negative. I won't take up too much of the readers' attention, but I'll try to sort everything out. So, the first good impressions were the high ground clearance and the huge interior. Sitting in the back seat, you can stretch your legs and there will still be room. A long trip in such a cabin will not be tiring. The color scheme of the interior is well chosen, the plastic wood inserts are also on point, the soft plastic of the panel, the steering wheel, and the door trim. But the doors themselves let us down, or rather the opening mechanism, which creaks unpleasantly. The inconveniently located interior door handles force you to pull your elbow back, which rests against the seat. The design of the instrument panel is a bit outdated, but it is well readable, unlike the on-board computer and clock. In clear weather, their readings are not visible, and to see anything, you have to tilt your head down. The electric mirrors, electric seat adjustment for the driver and passenger, driver's seat height adjustment, and lumbar support adjustment for the front seats were pleasing. The location of the glove box between the front seats is absolutely not thought out; you want to move it forward to use it as an armrest. I especially want to note the air conditioner. It works perfectly, doing its job. The well-organized airflow will not let the feet of rear passengers freeze. You can feel a good air flow to the feet of rear passengers when the heater mode is on. The rear seats do not recline or fold down, but for transporting skis, there is an opening hatch in the backrest of the rear seat, through which it is possible to open the trunk lid in an emergency.

The installed audio system could have been better - various frequency and power settings did not give the expected result. This is all in a static state, but as soon as you started driving, the car, as they say, began to reveal itself. The driving qualities evoke exclusively positive emotions. With high ground clearance, you don't think about overcoming any obstacles, especially since large bumps are overcome just like small ones - imperceptibly. At a speed of 80 km/h with four people in the cabin, the "speed bump" practically went unnoticed. The car steers willingly, but at parking speeds, the heaviness is felt. The steering wheel is a bit heavy. Gear shifting is very noisy, especially first gear, but after a while you get used to it, and positive emotions push these little things far into the background. The engine gave a lot of pleasure. Regardless of the number of revolutions and a previously illogically engaged high gear, it has no trouble working smoothly and softly, easily accelerating the car. With smooth clutch operation, it easily pulls away from idle even with a loaded car and the air conditioner on. It's a pity that at a car price of 392 thousand rubles, there are no airbags.

This car has been driving on our roads for more than a year. I've only heard good reviews about it, but in any case, until you drive it yourself, it's impossible to form your own opinion.
The car cannot be called bright, unusual, or standout. But it can't be called ugly or outdated either. The design is far from modern, but fashion changes very quickly, and the general fundamental concepts of beauty remain the same. These are proportionality, symmetry, balance... That's how Samand looks. Simple and classic. Nothing extra. A style that will never get on your nerves, that will always please the eye. There are smooth contours and strict lines, swiftness and solidity, aggressiveness and comfort. Everything you need and as much as you need.

However, there is something that is hard not to notice right away. This is the ground clearance. Agree, for our conditions, this parameter is very important. Here it is so high that not every modern SUV can boast of it, and in combination with large wheels, it gives the car an all-terrain character. After all, probably every motorist dreams that in their own car you can drive in the city, and outside the city, and go out into nature without fear of getting stuck somewhere.
The spacious interior is trimmed with fabric and soft plastic. There are polished wood inserts. The color scheme is calm and cozy. The ceiling is very light, almost white. It looks good, but impractical - how long will it stay so white?.. The handles above the windows are spring-loaded, small and uncomfortable; you have to pull and hold them. Although you can do without them. There is a lot of free space, combined with good sound insulation and smoothness of the ride, this provides decent comfort for both rear passengers and the one in the front seat. The doors are large, easy and convenient to get out, but I wouldn't swing them wide, because you can hear a metallic grinding sound, it's not loud, but a bit frightening. The interior door handles are very inconveniently located.

The driver's seat is height-adjustable, which, in my opinion, is very thoughtful (I like to sit high). I liked that it is also equipped with lumbar support. And in general, the driver's position is very comfortable, and the steering wheel is also adjustable. The main instruments are well readable, the view is wide, nothing interferes, the rear-view mirrors are large. The car handles very precisely, though the power steering is very stiff, it's hard to turn with one hand. Maybe it can be adjusted somehow?.. And with the engine off, the steering wheel is generally very difficult to turn. The on-board computer screen was very surprising; it is located low and is hard to read from the driver's seat. You can't work with it while driving... And the car moves easily and confidently, accelerates quickly, speed is not felt. The engine is quite powerful and torquey, and at the same time it is also soft and smooth. And it's almost inaudible in the cabin.
The braking system also pleased with its clarity and firmness. The pedal is moderately stiff and allows very smooth braking.
I would especially like to note the suspension performance. It swallows small bumps and smooths out potholes and pits very well. During the entire trip, we were only slightly jolted once. It turned out to be a speed bump, and we were driving at about 80 km/h.
Overall, the car is made quite well; the main parameters such as comfort, design, and driving performance make you forget about minor flaws. There is only one left - the price. It is quite high.

Now I look at the badge and understand its meaning. It symbolizes a "dark horse" that few people know about. Surprisingly, Iran also produces cars. Of course, it's not their own development, but a remake of a Peugeot, but nevertheless, it's a fact. The French, as is known, don't particularly care who they sell licenses to, but excuse me, Iran! Well, let's hope this "dark horse" doesn't turn into a "Trojan horse" for some. It's interesting to assess how this newly minted "mustang" is prepared for the market, what it can offer our buyers.
The exterior, let's say, is very even, without protruding details or obvious flaws. A solid four; it would be a five if it had a more modern look. The paint quality and panel fit are up to par. Apparently, the factory equipment is modern, so no flaws are visible in this regard. Even in the showroom, you involuntarily notice the unusually large ground clearance - a full 18 cm. Another 2 cm and we'd have almost a standard figure for crossovers. Do they also have no roads in Iran, or is this made for Russia? It's interesting how the suspension works with such a high body position. The showroom manager assured that the car is smooth on the road, which was hard to believe. Let's check! The interior is done in warm brownish tones, and the plastic wood inserts look quite noble, unlike even some Korean cars. The plastic is soft, but it resembles some kind of fabric. The seat is uncomfortable; I couldn't adjust the lumbar support, but there is electric adjustment for the backrest angle. Also, the seat rocks suspiciously. The door handles inside are shifted back, making them inconvenient to open; you have to bend your wrist. The tricky device installed turned out to be an onboard computer where you can enter data about oil changes, filters, etc. It automatically counts the kilometers traveled, measuring the remaining distance until the next change. There are some other functions, but I had no desire to figure them out; it would be faster to read the manual.
And the manager didn't lie - the Samand is soft, with a very pleasant ride. However, the power steering works strangely heavy. I first thought it wasn't there at all. It can't be that there's no power steering. But it is there, y-e-s, but heavy. The car is memorable because I broke my sunglasses. It happened in the back seat. There wasn't much sun, and I habitually put them on my forehead. The speed was about 80 km/h, somewhere near the village of Arakchino. Then I softly bounce up to the ceiling, hitting them against it. The glasses bent, and I was puzzled. It turns out we went over a speed bump. That's the kind of energy-intensive long-travel suspension it has, with no consequences. It provides not only a pleasant smooth ride but also decent handling. The brake system also gives no cause for complaint. The pedal action is firm and allows precise modulation of force. But the gearbox is a bit lacking. First gear engages with difficulty; the others seem to work fine. I thought it was just this particular car, but the showroom explained that this is the same in all Samand cars. But I assure you: you stop noticing this flaw after just 5-10 minutes of driving. You just don't engage the gear immediately, but after a slight pause. And the engine is good. It seems like only 100 "horses" (not counting the one on the grille), but how it pulls. Very elastic operation, and that says it all. The gear ratios are somewhat conditional up to a point - whether third, fourth, or fifth, it's all the same; only the tachometer readings reveal the engine's operating mode. There's no feeling when you literally sense with your whole body that it's time to shift. In the back seats, you can ride in a relaxed manner; there's plenty of space. In the middle, there's a comfortable armrest, behind which hides a hatch to the trunk. Regarding squeaks and noises, at the very beginning something rattled in the front door, but after the "speed bump" the sounds disappeared. Sound insulation, by the way, is also decent. Sitting in the back seat, the noise doesn't exceed acceptable levels; many classmates behave much worse. The window switch buttons are not in their usual places, and using them, like the handles, is inconvenient. Good thing that with air conditioning, you won't have to open the windows much. In summary, the car is not without flaws that are hard to hide (and who doesn't have them), but they are more than compensated by the car's driving characteristics. This is exactly the case when, to understand the car, you need to drive it.
