Hyundai Elantra. Price: from $17,790. On sale since December 2006

The first appearance of the Hyundai Elantra took place back in 1990. Over seventeen years, the model has undergone two complete generational changes and three planned updates. What came out in 2006 is already the fourth generation.

At first glance at the new model, we had a strong feeling that the chief designer sketched the designs while relaxing somewhere in the middle of the desert. Otherwise, such an unusual appearance cannot be explained. The car's silhouette resembles a sand dune — especially in profile. The beltline either climbs up at the hood, then drops to the center pillar, and then rushes upward again, as if driven by the wind. On one hand, it looks interesting, but in our opinion, such a style would suit a higher-class car better. The previous Elantra seemed more elegant. However, it's easy to criticize the artist, but understanding his intent is a more complex task.

But the interior makes a completely different impression. The cabin is not just pleasing to the eye — it's truly beautiful. There seems to be nothing supernatural, but the car immediately wins you over. Let's start with the materials — they are really top-notch. The dashboard not only looks soft but also feels soft to the touch. The steering wheel with optimal section and diameter adjusts both for tilt and reach. The instruments are perfectly readable in any position of the steering wheel and seat — the scales are well illuminated. The center console is also well thought out: it is slightly turned toward the driver, so all buttons and knobs are at hand. Special mention should be made of the climate control keys. They are large (that's already a plus) and are illuminated entirely, not just the symbols, as in many other cars where small buttons make this inconvenient. And, of course, the display with climate system operating modes. Its shape resembles a porthole, and all necessary icons are displayed on a soft blue background. It looks attractive and clear. In short, there are no complaints about the interior design of the new Elantra — it will appeal to many.

Space inside is also in order. Compared to its predecessor, the model has grown: the width of the front part of the cabin at hip level has increased by 32 mm, at shoulder level — by 22. In the rear, there is more shoulder room by 40 mm.

The trunk has also become more spacious: instead of 415 liters, now 460. By folding the rear seat backrest entirely or partially, you can transport long items. It's a pity that for this you will almost certainly need an assistant. The locks are located in the trunk, so it's inconvenient to pull the backrest and open the lock yourself — you might end up hugging the rear pillar.

Dealers offer two gasoline engines: a 1.6-liter "four" with 122 hp and a 2.0-liter version with 143 hp. For the test, we chose the younger unit and did not go wrong. With it, the car feels confident both in the city and on the highway: dynamics are sufficient, and it holds high speed without strain. Fuel consumption also pleasantly surprised — 30 liters was enough for a 300-kilometer route. The suspension also pleased: not too stiff, it comfortably absorbs bad asphalt and holds the course well. But the steering disappointed — it seemed overly sharp to us. This might seem like a plus, but as soon as you deviate the wheel slightly from zero, the car literally screws into the turn, and the driver loses the feeling of feedback. If the steering were tighter, this effect would most likely not occur.

Driving

The car is dynamic and quite predictable. It's just that the power steering is too eager.

Interior

Ergonomics are well thought out: all controls are in sight and easily accessible. The quality of materials and design are appealing.

Comfort

At a decent level, except for weak sound insulation in the area of the rear wheels.

Safety

Standard equipment includes two front airbags, ABS+EBD, front seat belts with pretensioners.

Price

Quite acceptable for the middle class, for which the car is intended.

Advantages and disadvantages

+ Good dynamics, effective brakes, comfortable interior.

- Excessive eagerness of the power steering, weak sound insulation.

Our opinion

It seems that the new Elantra, like its predecessors, will be in demand. There are enough prerequisites for this — from design to equipment, which has noticeably grown. The price is not confusing either. It has, of course, risen, but it still corresponds to what you get for this money.
