BMW continues to develop the 1 Series lineup, adding a more compact three-door version to the already familiar five-door hatchback. The new version is already available to order, and the options list includes the M package, which promises to make the car even more interesting.
Initially, the "one" was conceived as a universal platform on which different body styles could be built, from sedan to wagon. Some of these plans have already been realized: the coupe will appear in March next year, but the three-door hatchback can be bought right now. What has changed in the car besides the number of doors?
The three-door version has become lighter by just ten kilograms, and its dimensions remain the same. This means that rear passengers will not be more cramped than in the five-door modification. Of course, there is no talk of comfort at the level of older BMW models, but getting to the destination is quite realistic. The rear sofa, profiled for two occupants, hints that a third here is clearly superfluous. And even two people in the back will not be too comfortable on a long journey.
The interior has hardly changed compared to its predecessor. But the seating position for the driver and front passenger has become noticeably more comfortable thanks to wider doors. Visibility has also not suffered: it has even improved slightly due to the larger glass area.
The most powerful engine in the range is a three-liter unit producing 265 horsepower. The real M version is still ahead, and its release dates are not announced. But you can already order the M package, which is designated by index 337. It includes a set of additional equipment and styling solutions, such as door handles in body color. The interior with "ice silver" aluminum inserts also indicates belonging to the package, and the anthracite-colored headliner deserves special praise.
For those who want more, alloy wheels with a unique pattern created specifically for the M version are provided. Front tires are 205/50R17, rear are 225/45R17. Option number 704, included in the M package, adds a sport suspension that turns the hatchback into something like a go-kart. The car instantly responds to the steering wheel and handles body roll well during sharp maneuvers.
You have to pay for such handling with vibrations that are transmitted without delay from the road directly to the seats. Sport is sport. At the same time, the suspension practically does not break through even on serious bumps.
The sporty character of the new model is also emphasized by seats with developed lateral support. They firmly fix the driver, preventing shifting in corners, and the range of adjustments is impressive.
But option "710" from the M package raises questions. A sport steering wheel is, of course, mandatory for such a car, and it is here. But the rim turned out to be too thick, and you will have to get used to it. Prices for the three-door "kopek" with petrol engines start from ?22,200. The base 120 model costs ?23,700, and for the M package they will ask for an additional ?4,000.
As a result, the car turned out successful. The engineers managed to create a car with a truly sporty character that will surely find its fans among Russian BMW enthusiasts.
Saving fuel
As an option, an automatic engine start-stop system is offered. It works like this: when stopping at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, you need to shift the gear lever to neutral and release the clutch — the engine will stall. When you press the clutch, it will start again. This allows you not to waste fuel on a stationary car. True, such a system is only available on versions with a manual transmission.

Our opinion
The three-door "kopek" turned out to be more spirited than its five-door sibling. Engineers together with designers achieved the desired result: a stylish car with a sporty character. The offer becomes even more attractive thanks to the affordable M package, which changes not only the appearance but also the character of the car.
