The MG 5 is a compact model from the Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, expanding the brand's lineup. The number in the name indicates the model's place in the MG family and corresponds to the European car class.
SAIC Motor announced plans to create such a car in 2010. Initially, the MG 5 was intended to replace the MG 350, but later it was decided to produce both models, making the new one larger, sportier, and better equipped. Development of the striking hatchback began in late 2010 on the MG 350 platform. The exterior and interior design was handled by Carl Gotham, who needed to give the car features typical of European models. Special attention was paid to safety: the body was reinforced, and the base version came with ABS, EBD, BA, CBC, TCS, and six airbags. Even in standard trim, the car received a wide range of equipment unavailable to competitors from Asia and Europe.
The MG 5 underwent test trials in China, Mongolia, and Russia. The concept was shown at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show. The model was officially presented at the 2013 Beijing Auto Show.
In Ukraine, official sales of the MG 5 began in May 2013. The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter VTi-Tech gasoline engine with VCT variable valve timing. The engine works with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. Drive is front-wheel.
