Advertising war of car brands

May 30, 2011 · A reader note from the archive

Not long ago, three car brands had a funny advertising spat, which was unexpectedly ended by a fourth.

It all started with BMW, which placed a poster congratulating Audi on winning the South African "Car of the Year" 2006 competition, while signing off as the winner of the "World Car of the Year" 2006 competition.

Audi did not remain in debt and responded with a poster congratulating BMW on winning "World Car of the Year" 2006, reminding of its own achievement — six consecutive victories in the Le Mans 24 Hour races (2000—2006).

Subaru also decided to put in its two cents and released an ad in which it was happy for BMW and Audi, who won "beauty contests," and reminded that it was its engines that were recognized as the best according to International Engine 2006.

Perhaps other brands would have joined this spat, but Bentley intervened and put an end to the dispute with its laconic and succinct ad, which turned out to be more convincing than all the previous ones.
