About the GMC brand

United States founded in 1912 Model range

The GMC brand originates from a 1909 deal when General Motors head William Durant reached an agreement with Max Grabowski, owner of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which produced trucks. That same year, GM also acquired another truck manufacturer, Reliance Motor Car Company. Based on these two companies, the General Motors Truck Company was founded in 1912, later simply called GMC. The first truck under the new brand was showcased in 1912 at the New York Auto Show. Later, GMC was established as a separate brand, primarily producing light- and medium-duty trucks, buses, and pickups. The company also manufactured specialized vehicles: fire trucks, ambulances, military and civilian heavy-duty trucks, as well as campers.

For most of its history, including the present, many GMC vehicles — SUVs, pickups, and trucks — are essentially "clones" of models produced under other General Motors brands.

In 2007, a historic event occurred for the brand: the full-size crossover GMC Acadia was released — the first vehicle from the marque with a unibody construction.
