Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. is a Chinese state-owned enterprise that manufactures passenger cars and components. The headquarters is located in Wuhu, China.

Corporate History

The company was founded in 1997 in Wuhu, Anhui Province. The Chinese government allocated 1.75 million yuan for the construction of an automobile plant designed to produce up to 60,000 passenger cars and 300,000 engines per year.

On March 18, 1997, production started at the Chery plant. In 1999, the company introduced its first proprietary engine, the SQR, and then launched its first car.

In 2001, Saic-Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. was established. On December 28 of the same year, the milestone of 30,000 produced cars was reached.

In 2002, Chery became the first Chinese automaker to successfully pass the side impact test at the China National Automobile Testing Center.

According to the J.D. Power China Initial Quality Study 2004, the Chery QQ model ranked first in the compact car segment.

By 2005, the company's assets reached $1.5 billion, and sales volume amounted to 189,100 vehicles. Chery ranked first in exports among Chinese manufacturers. At the same time, production began of the new generation ACTECO engines, developed jointly with the Austrian company AVL. The company also produces a range of engines from 0.8 to 4.0 liters (V8), including gasoline, diesel, inline, and V-shaped.

In 2007, the laboratory of the British Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) conducted an official crash test of the Chery Amulet sedan. The successful results allowed sales of this model to begin in European Union countries.
