9. Warning signals
9.1. Warning signals are:
a) signals given by turn indicators or by hand;
b) sound signals;
c) headlight flashing;
d) switching on low beam headlights in daylight;
e) switching on hazard warning lights, brake lights, reversing lights, and the identification sign of a road train;
f) switching on an orange flashing beacon.
9.2. The driver must give signals with the turn indicators of the corresponding direction:
a) before starting to move and before stopping;
b) before changing lanes, turning, or making a U-turn.
9.3. In the absence or malfunction of turn indicators, the signals for starting to move from the right edge of the carriageway, stopping on the left, turning left, making a U-turn, or changing to the left lane are given by the left arm extended sideways, or by the right arm extended sideways and bent at the elbow at a right angle upward.
Signals for starting to move from the left edge of the carriageway, stopping on the right, turning right, or changing to the right lane are given by the right arm extended sideways, or by the left arm extended sideways and bent at the elbow at a right angle upward.
In the absence or malfunction of brake lights, such a signal is given by the left or right arm raised upward.
9.4. The signal with turn indicators or by hand should be given well in advance of the maneuver (taking into account the speed of movement), but not less than 50-100 m in built-up areas and 150-200 m outside them, and should be stopped immediately after its completion (the hand signal must be finished directly before the start of the maneuver). It is prohibited to give a signal if it may be unclear to other road users.
Giving a warning signal does not give the driver an advantage and does not relieve him from taking precautionary measures.
9.5. It is prohibited to give sound signals in built-up areas, except when it is impossible to prevent a traffic accident without them.
9.6. To attract the attention of the driver of a vehicle being overtaken, headlight flashing may be used, and outside built-up areas, also a sound signal.
9.7. It is prohibited to use high beam headlights as a warning signal in conditions where this could lead to blinding other drivers, including through the rear-view mirror.
9.8. During the movement of mechanical vehicles in daylight, for the purpose of indicating the moving vehicle, low beam headlights must be switched on:
a) in a column;
b) on route vehicles moving along a lane marked by road sign 5.8, against the general flow of vehicles;
c) on buses (minibuses) carrying organized groups of children;
{Subparagraph "c" of paragraph 9.8 as amended by CM Resolution No. 876 of 01.10.2008}
d) on large-sized, heavy-duty vehicles, agricultural machinery with a width exceeding 2.6 m, and vehicles carrying out road transportation of dangerous goods;
{Subparagraph "d" of paragraph 9.8 as amended by CM Resolution No. 634 of 09.07.2008; with changes introduced according to CM Resolution No. 196 of 26.02.2020}
e) on the towing vehicle;
f) in tunnels.
On all mechanical vehicles outside built-up areas, daytime running lights must be switched on, and if they are not provided in the vehicle's construction, low beam headlights.
{Paragraph 9.8 supplemented with a new paragraph according to CM Resolution No. 111 of 11.02.2013; with changes introduced according to CM Resolution No. 1105 of 20.10.2023}
In conditions of insufficient visibility, high beam headlights or additionally fog lights may be switched on on mechanical vehicles, provided that this does not blind other drivers.
9.9. Hazard warning lights must be switched on:
a) in the event of a forced stop on the road;
b) in the event of a stop at the request of a police officer or due to the driver being blinded by headlights;
{Subparagraph "b" of paragraph 9.9 as amended by CM Resolution No. 1029 of 26.09.2011}
c) on a mechanical vehicle moving with technical malfunctions, if such movement is not prohibited by these Rules;
d) on a mechanical vehicle being towed;
e) on a mechanical vehicle marked with the identification sign "Children", carrying an organized group of children, during their boarding or alighting;
f) on all mechanical vehicles of a column during their stop on the road;
g) in the event of a traffic accident.
9.10. Together with switching on the hazard warning lights, a warning triangle or a flashing red light should be placed at a distance ensuring road safety, but not closer than 20 m to the vehicle in built-up areas and 40 m outside them, in the event of:
a) a traffic accident;
b) a forced stop in places with limited road visibility in at least one direction of less than 100 m.
9.11. If the vehicle is not equipped with hazard warning lights or they are malfunctioning, it is necessary to place a warning triangle or a flashing red light:
a) behind the vehicle specified in paragraph 9.9 ("c", "d", "e") of these Rules;
b) on the side of worse visibility for other road users in the case specified in subparagraph "b" of paragraph 9.10 of these Rules.
9.12. The flashing red light emitted by the lamp, which is used in accordance with the requirements of paragraphs 9.10 and 9.11 of these Rules, must be clearly visible both in sunny weather during the day and in conditions of insufficient visibility.
