10. Starting movement and changing its direction

10. STARTING OFF AND CHANGING DIRECTION

10.1. Before starting off, changing lanes, and any change of direction, the driver must make sure that it will be safe and will not create obstacles or danger to other road users.

10.2. When entering a road from a residential area, courtyards, parking areas, petrol stations, and other adjacent territories, the driver must give way to pedestrians and vehicles moving along it before the carriageway or sidewalk, and when leaving the road - to cyclists and pedestrians whose direction of movement he is crossing.

10.3. When changing lanes, the driver must give way to vehicles moving in the same direction on the lane he intends to enter.

In the event of a simultaneous lane change of vehicles moving in the same direction, the driver on the left must give way to the vehicle on the right.

10.4 Before turning right or left, including towards the main road, or making a U-turn, the driver must take the appropriate extreme position on the carriageway intended for movement in that direction in advance, except when making a turn when entering an intersection with roundabout traffic, where the direction of travel is determined by road signs or road markings, or where movement is possible only in one direction established by the configuration of the carriageway, road signs, or markings.

{Paragraph one of clause 10.4 as amended by CMU Resolution No. 111 of 11.02.2013}

A driver making a left turn or U-turn outside an intersection from the appropriate extreme position on the carriageway of this direction must give way to oncoming vehicles, and when performing these maneuvers not from the extreme left position on the carriageway - also to vehicles moving in the same direction. A driver making a left turn must give way to vehicles moving in the same direction ahead of him and making a U-turn.

{Paragraph two of clause 10.4 as amended by CMU Resolution No. 111 of 11.02.2013}

If there are tram tracks in the middle of the carriageway, the driver of a non-rail vehicle making a left turn or U-turn outside an intersection must give way to the tram.

10.5. The turn must be performed so that when leaving the intersection of carriageways, the vehicle does not end up on the lane of oncoming traffic, and when turning right, one should drive closer to the right edge of the carriageway. Exiting an intersection with roundabout traffic may be done from any lane if the direction of travel is not determined by road signs or markings and this will not create obstacles for vehicles moving in the same direction on the right.

{Clause 10.5 as amended by CMU Resolution No. 860 of 15.11.2017}

10.6. If a vehicle, due to its dimensions or other reasons, cannot make a turn or U-turn from the appropriate extreme position, it is allowed to deviate from the requirements of clause 10.4 of these Rules, if this does not contradict the requirements of prohibitory or mandatory road signs, road markings, and will not create danger or obstacles to other road users. If necessary, to ensure road safety, one should seek assistance from other persons.

10.7. U-turn is prohibited:

a) at railway crossings;

b) on bridges, overpasses, viaducts, and under them;

c) in tunnels;

d) when visibility of the road is less than 100 m in at least one direction;

e) at pedestrian crossings and closer than 10 m from them on both sides, except for the case of a permitted U-turn at an intersection;

f) on motorways, as well as on roads for cars, except for intersections and places marked with road signs 5.29 and 5.30.

{Subparagraph "f" of clause 10.7 as amended by CMU Resolution No. 1091 of 29.09.2021}

10.8. If there is a deceleration lane at the point of leaving the road, the driver intending to turn onto another road must change lanes to this lane in a timely manner and reduce speed only on it.

If there is an acceleration lane at the point of entering the road, the driver must drive along it and merge into the traffic flow, giving way to vehicles moving on that road.

10.9. While driving a vehicle in reverse, the driver must not create danger or obstacles to other road users. To ensure traffic safety, he must, if necessary, seek assistance from other persons.

10.10. It is prohibited to drive vehicles in reverse on motorways, roads for cars, railway crossings, pedestrian crossings, intersections, bridges, overpasses, viaducts, in tunnels, at their entrances and exits, as well as on road sections with limited visibility or insufficient visibility.

Reverse driving is allowed on roads with one-way traffic provided that the requirements of clause 10.9 of these Rules are met and it is impossible to approach the object in any other way.

10.11. In cases where the trajectories of vehicles intersect, and the order of passage is not determined by these Rules, the driver to whom the vehicle approaches from the right side must give way.
