AirBag (front and side airbags, curtain airbags) (Airbag)

AirBag is a passive safety system that protects the driver and passengers upon impact. It is activated by a signal from the control unit and deploys almost instantly — in about 35 milliseconds. The airbag moves toward the person at a tremendous speed, exceeding 300 km/h. If the seatbelt is not fastened, such contact can be dangerous. When a child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, the airbag must be deactivated.

Airbags are divided into frontal and side. Frontal ones are located in front of the driver and passenger — in the steering wheel and above the glove box. This also includes knee airbags, which protect the legs and are located under the steering column and the glove box.

Side airbags come in two types: for torso protection — they are built into the seat backrests, and for head protection, which are called curtain airbags. The latter are placed in the side pillars of the body, and when deployed, they cover the entire area of the side windows.

Up to twelve airbags can be installed in the cabin. The control unit assesses the circumstances of the accident — speed, impact angle, presence of a front passenger — and activates only those airbags that are needed in a specific situation.
