The four rings on the Audi emblem symbolize the merger of four independent automakers (Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer) into a single concern, Auto Union AG, which took place in 1932.

Immediately after the creation of the new structure, an agreement was signed with Wanderer Werke to purchase its automotive division. The city of Chemnitz was chosen as the headquarters of the united group. The four rings became the symbol of this union and have been preserved as Audi's trademark. At that time, Auto Union AG ranked second among German automotive groups in terms of production volume. In 1934, seeking to strengthen its image and make the brand more recognizable, the company decided to compete in prestigious Grand Prix races.

In subsequent years, Auto Union racing cars, known as the "Silver Arrows," achieved numerous victories in competitions and championships worldwide, and also set a number of world records.
