Brilliance Cross: compact urban crossover
Brilliance Cross is an attempt by the Chinese brand Brilliance Auto, positioning itself as premium, to create a compact urban crossover. The model name refers to the "crossover" class.
Instead of developing a completely new model, the company decided to convert the existing FRV (BS2) hatchback into a "crossover." The five-door model's ground clearance was increased to 140 mm, longitudinal roof rails and a spoiler were added, and the body was surrounded by plastic cladding. The car's exterior was designed by specialists from the Italian design center Pininfarina, giving it European features. Technically, the Brilliance Cross repeats the donor hatchback: engines are built under Mitsubishi license, and suspension tuning was handled by Porsche specialists. Drive is only front-wheel.
A pre-production prototype was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007, and serial production began two years later — that much time was spent on eliminating shortcomings. In 2010, the model received a light facelift: the shape of the radiator grille, front and rear bumpers, side mirror housings changed, and interior trim materials improved. At the same time, new, more economical and environmentally friendly engines appeared.
In Ukraine, the Brilliance Cross was introduced in May 2011. Sales were discontinued the following year due to low demand. On the Ukrainian market, the car was offered in two trim levels — Comfort and Deluxe. Under the hood was a new 1.5-liter gasoline engine created by Brilliance engineers under Mitsubishi license (the same one installed on the previous generation Mitsubishi Colt). The engine worked in conjunction with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
