According to data from a research company specializing in providing information about traffic jams, residents of Milan spend the longest time in congestion. Local drivers spend 57 hours a year in traffic.
The congestion index of a particular city is calculated using a special formula. It is based on the principle of comparing the time motorists take when driving on free roads with the actual travel time along a certain section of the route during peak hours.
Interestingly, according to a recent study by the navigation device manufacturer TomTom, the most congested city in Europe is Moscow.
In any case, INRIX claims that the congestion ranking of European and North American cities today looks like this:
1. Milan
2. Brussels
3. Antwerp
4. Honolulu
5. Los Angeles
6. London
7. San Francisco
8. Manchester
